The Giving Tree

One of my favorite parental tasks is reading to my beautiful girls at bedtime. Tonight, I read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.

It is a beautiful story about a tree's love for a boy throughout his life and how the tree eventually gave all she had to give.

I wonder how many of you know the book?

There's even a Wikipedia site about some of the interpretations of the text.

Life is good. Love is beautiful. And the tree was happy.

As the mother of 3 daughters (including Meredith, I loved reading The Giving Tree to them as well. Shel Silverstein was always one of our favorites. Enjoy those bedtime stories with your girls. They will be grown before you turn around.

  4. HATE IT! Talk about an ungrateful kid!!! ...okay, so I love Shel, but really, what is the message of this book?

  5. I have mixed feelings about the book. The kid is indeed ungrateful, the tree is taken advantage of...seems kind of like a co-dependent relationship...and yet, there is something so beautiful about that kind of selfless giving that I'm still touched by the book's message. I guess that's kind of like life, isn't it?
