Suitcase Info from Witte
At the current time, the suitcase that you check cannot weigh more than 50 pounds and should have a maximum size of 62" (height plus width plus depth). If the suitcase is much over 50 pounds, they will charge you for it right at the ticket counter. You can check one suitcase (this is our rule b/c of limited space on the motorcoach). You can bring one small piece of hand luggage - soft sided w/out wheels - that weighs no more than 15 pounds. Plus a purse and a camera.

brilliant comment
While I was sitting in the pews at rehearsal today, I couldn't help but ponder over some of the comments mentioned in class and on the blog over the past few weeks. Experiencing the choir as a bystander made me realize just how different our experience is from those sitting in the audience. We're like the inner workings of a clock, each piece needing to fit perfectly into the next piece for the clock to function properly. Only we can't see the end product, the face of the clock, the time. We only see and hear those directly by us. Only those who are on the outside can truly experience the product of our hard work. We are the harshest judges, yet we're the only ones who can't truly hear ourselves.

Wonderful Words to the Choir
It is great to have an appreciative audience at our concerts. It is even better to hear from them after the concert.
We received this wonderful comment from UAB employee Betty McCulloch today:
I was in the audience Saturday night during the UAB and Decatur choir performance, and I congratulate you, Dr. Davis and all members of the choirs for an outstanding performance. The music was spectacular and thrilling – so much so that I felt spiritually moved during and after the performance. It is so exciting to know that so many talented students are interested in making music, and I was able to experience it for FREE! I lament that more of the UAB community wasn’t there to hear the program, and I will spread the word before your next performance. Please pass on my congratulations to Dr. Davis and all choir members. And I wish you fun and success at your upcoming competition.
Wonderful words!
Recording Session Tuesday and Thursday

More Tablet PC for anyone interested
I assembled this list of links for my brother-in-law tonight and I thought I would include it for any geeks out there who want to know more about the Tablet PC.
I wish I was a student again to take advantage of what it could have done for me then!
The TPC links I enjoy, in no particular order:

Precious Lord Dedication
Thanks, choir, for your fine singing of "Precious Lord." You did a great job and maybe we can sing it a few more times in France.
These are the words I wanted to say for all to hear:
“There is another link that connects UAB and Decatur and it is the history that Carl and I shared together at the
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand Lord, lead me home
When my way grows drear
precious Lord linger near
When my life is almost gone
At the river, Lord, I stand
Guide my feet and hold my hand:
Take my hand, Lord, and lead me home.

Concert Thoughts
Great job on everything.
We will dissect and analyze on Monday -- for tonight, feel great about everything you did. I think it was the strongest all-around UAB choir concert I've been a part of. I thought all three UAB choirs were magnificent and Decatur did an outstanding job.
Do me a favor: only positive comments on the blog. We'll be constructive in our commenting later.
Blessings to all.

Brilliant Student: Chris Reid
English Version
To begin reception (of signals)
Just open the suitcase (in this case, the casing, I'd say)
There is no part/mechanism
To place/ move / fiddle with
No frame (an AM frame, I think they mean)
No antenna
To orient
No plug/ electrical ground/ landline
It's "par excellence" (as in, highly recommended, self evidently good)
THE hip accessory/ instrument
Practical and sturdy
(perfect) for the car, camping and the boat

Upcoming Recording
We'll be recording at Bluff Park Methodist again. If you don't know where that is, look here.
You are working hard during the "push" time of the year. I appreciate your efforts and I'm excited about our concert on Saturday. Are you? I've not blogged as much lately; I've been spending non-triplet time with my new Tablet PC. Let me say this: I love it. You need one.
France approaches. Study they music so that we may appear worthy when it is our time to sing. If I were more talented, I would insert a Haiku here. For the best in Haikus written to encourage good friends, look here.

Der Tanz, KatieMo, and Babies Crying at 3 AM
I decoded this translation at AltaVista Babel Fish Translation site, a fantastic resource:
It talks and dreams the youth so much, about dancing, Galoppen, Gelagen, at one time reaches it a truegliches goal, there hears one it sigh and complain. Soon hurt the neck, and soon hurt the chest, disappeared all the himmlische desire, only this time still return me health! Thus the view hoping flehet from the sky!
It isn't a perfect translation but you get the idea of what the text is about.
I found the German text here.
I have a book at school that will have the translation. Will get for choir tomorrow!

Class Discussions and The Great Making of Music
Great discussion today during class and a fine rehearsal also.
A few reflections:
1. Learning what we've already learned. Don't be discouraged at having to relearn things that we learned the last time. It happens with every piece that we work on. It will help if you NOTATE the changes that we make in the music and STUDY outside of class, of course. However, it happens with every piece of music in every choir, and we get better every time. Overall, I'm very pleased with our progress.
2. We made excellent music on ITYJ today. The things we put back in place: singing softer, exploiting rhythmic differences in Alto, Tenor, Bass.
3. Mate Saule: finding our loud voices for the ending was spectacular.
4. Daring to be the best. To win you must risk. To risk you must have confidence. Confidence comes from "flipping a switch inside" and preparing ahead of time. Get your head on right, everyone: I want to win.
There is an aggressiveness that we need to find in the next couple of rehearsals--a commitment to passion and "putting it out there". Let's find it tomorrow.

Tablet PC Crazy
My latest quest: a tablet pc.
Every I turn I read about them. The latest mention was here.
I never thought about it before until I played on one in CompUSA the other day. It was incredible. I've read alot about them over the past week or so and I have a feeling I will own one soon.
My other tech adventure has been podcasts. Any of you doing that yet? I listen to my ipod over my car stereo on the way to school. Sometimes I listen to my crazy radio show but today I listened to a podcast about the Tablet PC.
This is a site I think I've linked to before. You hardcore students should look into it. Fascinating to me.
OK . . . choir starts again tomorrow. An intense two weeks and then we have a concert . . . the best yet.
