caroline abstract #1, originally uploaded by philipco.

Or a creation of Daughter #2 Caroline?

looks like an angry orange dragon with black wings and a super long tongue flying over a multicolored mountainous landscape... that has a pink christmas tree.

I think that it represents the uncertainty we feel as (fill this blank in with Caroline's age)-year old human beings, taking into account the societal pressures to eat lollipops (the colorful dots in the upper left hand corner of this abstract) yet the parental pressures to eat healthier treats such as oranges (represented by the overriding orange line). The barely visible gray line represents life and the enjoyment thereof; covered with the overbearing troubles (represented by all of the other notably brighter and therefore distracting colors atop the grey) created by the earlier discussed peripheral pressures to make dietary decisions based on the belief of another as opposed to one's personally derived opinion. These pressures are so overbearing that they make the enjoyment of life (again, the gray line) nearly invisible.

I think Caroline has a profound talent for art, here.

I LOVE this! The choice of colors, the fact that her signature, such as it is, is part of the art, is a wonderful contrast to the other, less structured part of the design...She did this all deliberately while consuming pizza at Brio, right? My mom still has 2 pastel drawings that I made in pre-school that I remember creating, and I look at them and think "What the hell was going through my brain right about then?"...It's just fabulous!

I like how it is non-representational. She seems to have a good sense of balance not only with space (negative and positive), but also with color. the line she uses is vibrant and interesting. you should encourage her to do more and stay creative. modern/abstract art is much more difficult to do well than photorealism.

I hope you don't refer to her as Daughter #2 to her face.

Sure I do . . . she's Caroline and she's the middle child, born one minute after child #1 and one minute before child #3.

They all know they share the #1 position in Dad's heart.

I'm a middle child...what does THAT tell you?...

i gotta admit, as kid #2 in my family (2 minutes before kid #3) it kinda sucked. I know (and knew) my parents loved me just as much, but i still felt like they'd spend more time with the 'left out' older bro, or the 'attention-seeking' little one. being referred to as second just reinforces that mindset.

i'd often kinda fade into the background 'cause #1 and baby were around. (or to be more accurate, i'd be sitting in the middle seat of the car to break up their huge fights)

of course, the fact that i'm the only girl does make me awesome....
