The bottom one is okay, IF the skirt is a-line. It actually looks like it kind of tapers in, I can't tell... that would be bad, though. The solid black with sleeves would be alright. I could handle it... especially if we got to wear pearls. =D
AH, the dreaded time of "choosing the women's uniform!" I do not envy you.
The bottom line: the dress needs to look "acceptable" on all shapes and sizes. Glamour can not be the deciding factor. So often it comes down to this - the petite women complain about a "bag dress" and want a narrow-bodiced "looks like it came from Lladro" dress. And the extra-shapely women complain about a dress that shows "all the rolls" and want a fuller dress that hangs straight. No one is usually happy. But again, the goal is uniformity, not primarily glamour. Everyone needs to look acceptable in their uniform.
That said, of the three options presented, I would most CERTAINLY vote for number one. I'm not sure who's favorite is the third one... but numbero uno is my vote. Number three's plunging neckline will be too revealing, and the wrap-around bodice will not look flattering on the "extra-shapely tummy."
I second the opinion of the person who wrote that the "red one is ugly." Plus, if it is truly a two-piece, not something you want to deal with.
That leaves number one. I like the fact that it is long and straight; some taper at the waist, but not too much to make it look like a girdle on the more rotund. I'm not thrilled about the white at the bust; I prefer solid black uniforms on the ladies. And I like covered shoulders, though I'm not too taken with the "scalloped" kind of shoulders on this dress. Personally, I'd keep looking, but basing my comparisons on number one.
Also, another big issue for me as a director is having dresses that have a high back on them. Unfortunately, my women's choir dresses have a low back, lower than the neckline. They often show the women's bras, which is unsightly...not to mention when ladies forget to wear black undergarments...this is even MORE unsightly. So, I always suggest purchasing gowns with high backs.
i really like the first one....as many people know i was never a fan of the old dresses BUT the honest truth was they look good on stage with the men...keeping that in mind i really thing that the first dress would look the best on stage, complimenting the guys' tuxes
so i feel like i've looked at theses a million times, and the bottom one was the favorite because the top one came from the NEW catalog that no one had looked out, and i think i like the top one the best cause it has some white on it...plus i'm thinking the 3/4 length sleeves maybe end up looking weird... i dunno just a thought
As much as I like the idea of getting new dresses, I agree with Delia that the ones we have now do look really good from a distance on stage. The white at the top and bottom of our current dresses is slimming on all figures and easily distracts from most girls' insecurities. Not to mention that our current dress matches the guys nicely and is practical in that it conforms to what most choir directors consider to be a "good" dress. Out of the three we picked, I like the top one. I just wanted to offer up the notion that we shouldn't settle for something less for the sake of getting something new. oh yeah, what happened to the black one Maggie found with the princess (I think that's what it was) neckline? ~Rachel~
p.s. I don't necessarily think one of these would be "settling for less"...I just think we should keep our current dress on the table for discussion. ~Rach~

By the way, "the ugly red one" will not be red and it will not be velvet as shown. It comes in many fabrics and color choices. It is the idea of an aria jacket that is on the table, not red velvet. ~Maggie
If the first one is all one piece, I think it will look the best on all of the ladies. If it is a separate jacket, I'm not sure it will hang correctly on everyone. If the second is truly velvet, then is it machine washable? Velveteen is washable, but not velvet. I personally like the bottom right one the best. I think the rouching (gathers) across the mid-section would be flattering on all of the girls. But is it too low cut? Regardless, I like the idea of the pearls with all the dresses. ~Mary F.
